A few years ago, the microwave was only used to heat leftovers. Nowadays, the microwave has become a life-saver for those who are running out of time and can be used to prepare both simple and complex dishes. The way microwaves are used and maintained also has several effects on its durability and on your food as well! Here are 4 simple ways to keep your microwave clean and in the best condition!
1) Avoid Spills
Don’t be that person who leaves the food uncovered before microwaving! Leaving the food uncovered results into messy splatters all over, and by the time the microwave stops, the splattered food has already been dried up. This makes it even harder to clean, especially if there has been liquid or fat in there. To avoid any mess, make sure to cover food items with the microwave-safe lid first, specifically for sauce-based foods and soups.
2) Don’t Put in All Types of Dishware
Containers made of metal, aluminum foil and dishware with silver or gold accents should not be put inside a microwave. These materials function as a reflective surface inside the microwave, reflecting its light waves and emit sparks. This can be dangerous if the appliance is not turned off right away, resulting in an explosion. To prevent this, only use dishware made of microwave-safe materials like ceramic, plastic, or glass items. If you notice that a container is hotter than the food after microwaving, avoid using it in the microwave. Even better, try to look for dishware labeled ‘’microwave-safe’’ and be less stressed!
3) Avoid Slamming the Door
Many people slam the microwave door or try to close it using their elbow. However, most of us are unaware that doing so may damage the appliance, particularly the microwave latch. These actions might destroy the three switching mechanisms of the microwave latch, which have to be closed in a specific order.
4) Clean the Microwave With Baking Soda
If your microwave is covered with food spills, you can get rid of the unpleasant odor and clean it using baking soda. Baking soda and steam help to loosen up the food debris and other particles, making it easy to clean. Additionally, it also leaves the appliance with a pleasant smell. For this, you will need two tablespoons of baking soda and a microwave-safe container filled with a cup of water. Microwave the mixture for 3 minutes. Lastly, wipe the microwave with a wet cloth or sponge, and it will be as clean as new!
